Welcome to Hidden Crux!!

For climbers, coaches and those who support them, we are committed to the mental health and wellness of the rock climbing community.  We are excited to begin this journey and are here to support you.  Through the blog posts, webinars and conversations on this platform we aim to enhance your knowledge and skills to support your efforts to be your best in sport and life.

It has been a challenging year for athletes and coaches.  The concern is that the mental health consequences of isolation, disconnection, worry and fear will have long lasting effects.  Although engagement in a sporting activity is protective to mental health, the data are clear that mental ill-health does not discriminate - athletes are equally at risk.

The truth is that athletes can be performing at a high level and be struggling with their mental health at the same time. It has been heartening to see some of our elite athletes post about stress, anxiety, depression and disordered eating. Let’s celebrate these role models who are courageously breaking barriers and helping others by telling their story. Hidden Crux is a space where these conversations are front and center!

Athletic culture promotes being tough and persevering through immense hardship. This enhances the stigma around asking for help or discussing mental challenges.  This strategy of suppressing emotion can work for some, but is often unsustainable over time.  As members of the climbing community, we have the power to choose to be kinder to ourselves and embrace our hardships as well as our successes!  Let’s do it together!

Mental wellness is the foundation of peak performance. There are sufficient studies in Neuroscience, Positive Psychology and Mindfulness, supporting the notion that brain health is trainable. Hidden Crux brings you evidenced based skills to:  Balance the nervous system; be present in the process of learning and enhancing your skills; connect or reconnect with the joy of the sport; and most of all, expand your insight and gratitude into your own awesomeness!  Join us on this journey.  We are committed to helping you optimize your health and success in the sport of climbing and your personal life.
